Our story
About Us
Signs of Sunshine grew out of real families, real hardship, and the belief that a helping hand changes everything.
On a November afternoon in 2009, we suddenly lost our wonderful Mom and Nana, LaDon Tudor, to undetected heart disease.
LaDon was an amazing woman who taught all of us a great deal about compassion, but just as importantly, she taught us acceptance. Whether it was someone in a wheelchair or a balding child with leukemia, she taught us that everyone deserves care, respect, and dignity. She taught us never to give up on someone and that we all have the chance to do great things in this life when given the proper tools.
After her passing, we knew we needed to do something to carry on the wonderful spirit with which she was graced. We wanted to continue the generosity and compassion that came so naturally to both her and our father. LaDon had a remarkable way of spreading her sunshine to all of us, and through Signs of Sunshine, we wanted to pass that sunshine on to our community.
Where Our Story Began
Much of LaDon’s compassion was shaped by a great tragedy our family faced in 1978.
Her son-in-law, Mike, was seriously injured in a work accident that left him with a brain injury and paralysis. Mike was in a coma for months and faced years of rehabilitation and major changes to his life.
As a family, we quickly learned just how much of our everyday lives needed to change. The home Mike lived in was not accessible to someone in a wheelchair. He could not easily go out and do many of the things other people could because public accessibility was far less common at that time.
We experienced firsthand the challenges that come when a person’s life—and the lives of those who love them—changes in an instant.
Sadly, Mike passed away in June 2023. His strength and perseverance, however, continue to inspire us, and he will remain forever in our hearts and minds.
Why Signs of Sunshine Exists
While accessibility has improved greatly over the years, everyday life can still be incredibly difficult to navigate for someone living with a disability. Whether or not someone uses a wheelchair, modifications are often needed to provide better access, greater independence, and an improved quality of life.
We understand that many individuals and families simply cannot afford to make necessary modifications to their homes or purchase the equipment needed to help someone become more mobile, independent, or functional. These challenges can be especially overwhelming when a family is suddenly faced with a disability, serious illness, or unexpected accident.
The financial hardship that follows can be devastating.
Whether someone is unable to work while battling a debilitating disease such as cancer or needs an extended period of recovery following a serious accident, bills can quickly mount alongside the many other challenges the family is already facing. Too often, those financial burdens make it even more difficult for individuals and their families to focus on what matters most—their recovery, their family, and their quality of life.
Carrying Their Sunshine Forward
Our personal understanding of these circumstances is what ultimately led us to establish Signs of Sunshine in 2012, with the help of our father and original founder, Donald Tudor.
Sadly, we lost our father in September 2025. But the vision we created together with him lives on through Signs of Sunshine and through the many lives we have been fortunate enough to touch over the years.
Today, we continue that vision in honor of LaDon, Mike, and Donald.
Their experiences shaped who we are. Their compassion shaped what we believe. And their lives continue to inspire what we do.
Through Signs of Sunshine, we hope to provide more than assistance. We hope to offer a little relief, a little hope, and a reminder to individuals and families facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances that their community cares.
Most of all, we hope to continue what LaDon did so naturally throughout her life: Spread a little sunshine wherever it is needed most.
